Services Offered for Preschool Children:

  • Morning storytimes for children 6 months to 5 with stories, songs, fingerplays, flannel boards, and crafts.

  • An evening storytime each month for families.

  • Monthly special events such as puppet shows, storytellers, and craft programs.

  • A summer reading program that includes a "Read to Me" component for preschool children, as well as a variety of special programs.

  • Coloring and craft sheets are available all week.

  • Visits to the library by preschool groups on Monday mornings, and outreach visits by a librarian to preschools on Tuesday mornings.  Call to schedule.

  • Display space for early childhood art exhibits.

Materials Offered for Preschool Children:

  • a large picture book collection, which includes hardcover books, paperbacks, and board books for babies.

  • "Early Readers" written specifically for children just learning to read.

  • "Big Books" for preschool children and their teachers.

  • Magazines for preschoolers and their families to borrow such as Sesame Street and Mary Beth's Crafty Kids.

  • A Parent/Teacher collection with books on parenting and early childhood learning activities, and magazines such as Family Fun and Mailbox.

  • A non-fiction collection that includes books that appeal to preschoolers, such as books on trucks and dinosaurs.

  • A collection of books, audio recordings, and videos in Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

  • Puppet and book sets which are available for loan.

  • Audiovisual materials including videos, DVDs, music cassettes and CDs, book/cassette kits, and CD ROMs.

  • Multimedia learning kits, many of which are suitable for preschoolers, on subjects such as "Curious George," "Community Workers," and "Arthur."

Services Offered for Elementary Age Children:

  • Reference services to assist children with finding materials and completing homework.
    Special events such as storytellers, performers, singers.

  • Craft programs are offered at various time throughout the month.

  • A craft and paper game table that is available all week and changed on Friday.

  • A summer and winter reading program for elementary age children, along with a wide variety of special programs.

  • Class visits every fall to the library by all third grades in the West Springfield Public Schools, as well as visits from individual classes upon request.

  • Monthly flyers sent to all West Springfield elementary schools.

  • Computer access to the Internet, reference databases, and word-processing.

Materials Offered for Elementary Age Children:

  • "Afternoon Antics" storytime offered once a month

  • Many picture books suitable for elementary age children.

  • "Early Readers" designed for beginning through 3rd grade readers.

  • Collections of hardcover and paperback fiction, for those just breaking into chapter books to intermediate-age children.

  • Notebooks listing the Accelerated Reader books for each school.

  • A large non-fiction collection selected to meet both school assignments and recreational reading.

  • Magazines for elementary-age children to borrow such as American Girl and Sports Illustrated for Kids.

  • Collections of books, videos, and audio-recordings in Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

  • A Parent/Teacher collection, including books on parenting, homework, special needs, math, history, and crafts, plus magazines like Family Fun and Mailbox.

  • "Big Books" for teachers and parents to use with groups.

  • Multimedia learning kits on topics such as Native Americans and Math gr.3-4.

  • Puppet and book sets available for loan.

  • Audiovisual collection including DVDs, CD ROMs, books on cassette, fiction and feature videos, non-fiction videos on cultures, history, geography, how to, etc., as well as music cassettes and CDs.

Services for Adolescents and Teens:

  • Reference services to assist children with finding materials and completing homework.

  • Craft programs designed especially for teens.

  • A craft and paper game table that is available all week and changed on Friday.

  • A summer and winter reading program with special components for teens, along with a wide variety of special programs.

  • Class visits to the library or visits to classes upon request.  Call to schedule.

  • Seasonal flyers sent to West Springfield Middle School.

  • Computer access to the Internet, reference databases, and word-processing.

Materials Offered for Adolescents and Teens:

  • A Young Adult collection which includes hardcover and paperback fiction for middle and high school students, as well as illustrated books like Spiderman and Sailor Moon.

  • A non-fiction collection in the YA section including books of specific interest to teens for both school assignments and recreational reading.

  • Notebooks with the West Springfield Middle School Accelerated Reader List.

  • Magazines for teens to borrow including Teen People, WWF, Mad, etc..

  • Collections of books, videos, and audio-recordings in Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

  • A Parent/Teacher collection for parents, caregivers, and teachers, which includes curriculum related materials, as well as parenting advice.

  • A Young Adult audiovisual collection including CD ROMs, books on tape, and music CDs.  The YA video collection includes feature videos, as well as non-fiction videos for teachers and students on health, drug abuse, etc.
